Safe browsing: how to protect yourself online

The internet is incredibly useful, but it's also where most digital risks originate. Fortunately, you can stay very safe online with a few simple steps.

1. Always use a modern browser

Browsers such as:

  • Google Chrome

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Mozilla Firefox

  • Safari (on Apple devices)

are regularly updated with security updates. Preferably use the browser that comes with your laptop—it's often configured most securely.

2. Note the lock in the address bar

A lock means that the connection is secure (https).
Please note: a lock means NOT ALLOWED that the website is reliable, but that your data is sent encrypted.

No lock? → Don't log in or enter any information.

3. Don't use public Wi-Fi without protection

Public Wi-Fi (in trains, cafes, hotels) is often unsafe.

Risks:

  • Others can watch your connection

  • Login details can be intercepted

  • Fake “free WiFi” networks can be set up by criminals

Use:

  • Your phone as a personal hotspot
    of

  • A VPN when using public Wi-Fi

4. Check if a website is reliable

Checklist:

  • Is the URL exactly correct (no spelling mistakes)?

  • Is there any strange advertising or pop-up?

  • Does the website look professional and complete?

  • Do you recognize the webshop from previous experience?
