First steps when you think you've been hacked

It's normal to panic, but stay calm. The calmer you act, the better you'll resolve the situation.

Recognize the signs of a hack

  • You are receiving password resets that you did not request

  • Suddenly you can no longer log in

  • You see unknown transactions

  • You get a lot of new spam

  • Contacts are reporting receiving strange messages from you

  • Apps or programs open by themselves

  • Your laptop suddenly becomes very slow

The 3 Most Important First Steps

1. Change your password on the affected account

Use a new, strong password that you've never used before.

2. Enable two-step verification (2FA)

Even if someone has your password, they will no longer be able to log in.

3. Check your email

Many malicious actors hack your email first, because that gives them access to all other accounts.

Tip:

If you doubt a hack is happening, assume it is.
