What is a data breach? And what should you do in the event of one?

A data breach means that your data has been leaked to unauthorized persons accidentally or through a hack .

How do you notice this?

• You receive an email from a company that there was a leak

• You receive password resets that you did not request yourself

• You see unknown login attempts

• You suddenly receive a lot of spam

• You receive phishing messages that seem to be tailored specifically to you

What should you do?

1. Change your password immediately

Use a new, strong password that you've never used before.

2. Enable two-step verification (2FA)

For example:

• SMS

• Authenticator app

• Hardware key

3. Check other accounts

Did you use the same password there?

4. Check for data leaks

Websites like “Have I Been Pwned” let you know if your email address has been leaked.

5. Beware of suspicious emails

After a data breach, phishing often increases.
