Set up your laptop safely when using it for the first time

When you turn on your new laptop, you usually go through some initial setup. These simple steps will instantly make you much more secure.

1. Use a strong Windows or Mac account

Do not use an easy to guess password such as 123456, Welcome 01, or name + year of birth.
We'll delve deeper into strong passwords in module 2, but for now:

  • Use a passphrase (e.g., MyDogAlwaysWalksFast! )

  • Or a long password of at least 12 characters

A good password prevents others from accessing your laptop and all your accounts.

2. Set up screen lock

Make sure your laptop automatically locks when you walk away.
Handy when you're grabbing coffee, walking the dog, or coming into a video call.

Setting advice:

  • 5 minutes of inactivity → automatically locked

  • Windows: Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options

  • Mac: System Settings > Lock

3. Always turn on automatic updates

Updates may sound annoying sometimes, but they are essential.
They fix security holes and make viruses less likely to spread.

  • Always set Windows Updates or macOS Updates to automatic.

  • Install updates as they are offered.

4. Set up reliable Wi-Fi

Safe internet starts with safe Wi-Fi:

  • Use the Wi-Fi password printed on the sticker of your modem (don't change it to something simple).

  • Only share your password with people you trust.

  • Avoid unknown or public networks for important matters such as banking.
